Why the Google Pixel 9 Pro Fold Packs Extra Weight: A Reason Revealed

Summary

  • Pixel 9 Pro Fold could beat the Galaxy Z Fold 6 with a thinner design and larger foldable screen.
  • Google’s upcoming foldable could feature an 8-inch 120Hz display, the largest in book-style foldables.
  • The larger screen could have a negative impact on the weight of the Pixel 9 Pro Fold.

The first glimpses of the Pixel Fold 2 and Pixel 9 Pro Fold emerged in February, showcasing Google’s innovative take on foldable technology. Since that initial reveal, a series of leaks have meticulously outlined the crucial elements of the Pixel 9 Pro Fold, from its internal specifications to its camera capabilities. A recent leak further illuminates the dimensions of the Pixel 9 Pro Fold, highlighting how Google’s forthcoming foldable device is set to surpass the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 6 in a significant aspect.

Google’s original Pixel Fold, criticized for its bulky design, falls short when compared to leading foldable phones. However, rumors suggest a significant redesign with the upcoming Pixel 9 Pro Fold, which is expected to sport a much slimmer profile. According to a source from Android Headlines, the next-generation Pixel foldable will boast dimensions of 155.2 x 77.1 x 10.5 mm when folded. This dimension would position the Pixel 9 Pro Fold as 1.6mm thinner than the Galaxy Z Fold 6, which has measurements of 153.5 x 68.1 x 12.1 mm.

Furthermore, when unfolded, the Pixel 9 Pro Fold is anticipated to measure 155.2 x 150.2 x 5.1mm, subtly undercutting the Galaxy Z Fold 6’s thickness by 0.4mm with its 5.6 mm profile. For context, the original Pixel Fold’s dimensions are 139.7 x 79.5 x 12.1 mm when folded, and it expands to 139.7 x 158.7 x 5.8 mm. This planned redesign indicates Google’s commitment to refining the ergonomics and aesthetics of its foldable device line, aiming to provide a sleeker, more competitive product.

The Pixel 9 Pro Fold is expected to feature a large internal folding screen.

The soon-to-be-released Pixel foldable is set to tip the scales at 257g, marking a significant weight reduction from the previous Pixel Fold’s 283g. Nevertheless, when compared to its rivals, the Pixel 9 Pro Fold may not lead the pack in terms of weight. Competitors like the OnePlus Open (239g) and Galaxy Z Fold 6 (239g) boast lighter frames.

Notably, the Pixel 9 Pro Fold is expected to feature an 8-inch 120Hz foldable display, the largest to date for a book-style foldable device, and a step up from the Pixel Fold’s 7.6-inch screen. This larger display contributes to the device’s slightly heavier weight compared to its competitors. By comparison, the Galaxy Z Fold 6 features a 7.6-inch inner folding screen, and the OnePlus Open comes with a 7.82-inch display.

The upgrade doesn’t stop at the display size. The folding screen is also expected to receive a boost with the Super Actua Flex technology, offering a peak brightness of up to 2,700 nits and an HDR brightness of 1,600 nits. Early leaks suggest that Google’s latest foldable will be available in four colors and will be powered by the new Tensor G4 chip, promising enhanced performance and efficiency.
