How to Do Laundry Step by Step
Follow these simple steps.
Step 1: Separate your clothes
I always do more than one load of laundry at a time, so I start by sorting my laundry into piles: one of the smaller, lighter items; Another of jeans, hoodies and track pants. The color doesn’t matter because I always wash in cold water so the colors never run.
Pro tip: Wash similar items together if you have multiple loads to carry, this is easy to fold later.
Step Two: * Pour the detergent
The cleaner makes or breaks the whole process. Liquid laundry detergent is best because you can control the amount you use depending on the amount of laundry or the level of dirt. In my unbiased opinion, Gain Original Liquid Laundry Detergent is the best on the market because it looks like miracles, but that’s just me.
Measure a generous amount and pour it evenly around the bottom of the washing machine bowl. If you don’t use enough detergent, your clothes will be clean but may not have the fresh laundry smell that makes it worth it.
Pro tip: Don’t use washing up capsules. They are not always guaranteed to melt properly and can damage or stain your clothes. Scent enhancers are optional and often great, but they also run the risk of not completely dissolving.
Step 3: Toss in those clothes
Mix up your clothes, either piece by piece or some at a time, starting with the lightest things in your basket. Don’t put your clothes inside, just shake them out until they are almost full.
If this does not fit all of your clothes, repeat the process on another machine or after transferring this load to the dryer.
Pro tip: Modern appliances often have eco-friendly options to reduce the carbon footprint of your clothes.
Step 4: Start the washer
Wash them in cold water, they are better for your clothes and for the environment.
Pro tip: Warm water doesn’t wash clothes differently, it just makes the colors fade faster.
Step 5: Transfer to the dryer.
After about 30 minutes, you should go back and toss the clean clothes in the dryer. Put a drying sheet before your clothes and another after. Make sure the lint trap is clean so that the lint on your clothes has a place to go and doesn’t start a fire.
Pro tip: don’t leave your clothes on too long, they may come out with a burning smell and the whole process will be useless.
Step 6: Immediately fold the clothes.
Nobody likes wrinkled clothes, so it’s important to fold or hang them as quickly as possible. I, like most 21-year-olds, can’t or don’t have the means to iron, so this step is important to prevent wrinkles when you don’t have the means to remove them later.
